Should you or should you not fall asleep with your jewelry on?

Is it ok to wear jewelry while you are sleeping?

Many people have the same question.

The first thing that comes to people's minds is, what about bacteria build-ups or allergies?

But these two are only part of it.

Let's break it down and see different types of problems that may appear if you forget to take your jewelry off before bed.

Bacteria build-ups.

Cleaning your rings and earrings is essential not only to keep up the original appearance of your jewelry. You know that already, right?

Bacteria and dirt build up between each wear,

Some people think that once your pierced earlobes healed, they can not get infected anymore. Not true.

Rings most of the time are in close contact with your skin. So moisture that skin generates all the time creates a perfect environment for bacteria build-ups to grow.

The ear lobe splits & pulls.

Wearing heavy earrings can pull or stretch your ear lobe piercing. In its turn, pulled earrings can be damaging and cause ear lobe splits.

Each time you wake up missing an earring, it is most probably because you pulled it out in your sleep.

What if sleeping with a necklace may put the entire night's rest at risk. Chains can get easily tangled in your hair or wrap around your neck. Also, if your favorite necklace has pendants or charms with rather sharp shapes, they can poke you in your sleep.

There are a lot of different problems that can happen.

Sometimes people already had problems caused by sleeping with jewelry on, and now they are afraid to sleep with jewelry. They develop phobias.

They feel that wearing jewelry during the night sleep may cause a rash to break or an allergy to appear. This psychological problem may cause interruption or ruin the entire effect of good night sleep.

Strange, but one of the reported problems is losing gemstones that fall off jewelry during people's sleep. Again, make sure that you take your jewelry off at night.

Sleeping with your jewelry may also be the cause of jewelry start tarnishing. People often sweat in their sleep and the sweat that ends up on the jewels and dulls their shine.

If you never encounter tarnishing yet, you will most definitely notice it if you fall asleep with your ring or earrings that are not made from pure gold, silver, or stainless steel.

Tarnish is a fine layer of corrosion that will look green or gray and appears on the surface of a jewelry piece.

Gold or silver used in jewelry making are usually alloys, and these other metals mixed with jewelry react to moisture, air, or some different chemical compounds they are exposed to. This process looks like losing the shine and color on the jewelry side and as green or grey skin on the wearer's side.

You will most probably experience the moment when you take off your favorite piece of jewelry, and you see a green or gray residue develops underneath. A quick wash of your hands or earlobes will usually remove this green or gray residue, but it can be not very pleasant to do it all the time.

A good habit is to clean your jewelry before you go to sleep.

There are simple ways how to do it.

Soaking in warm water usually does the trick.

Sometimes you may have to use toothpaste and a toothbrush to clean your jewelry before going to sleep.

It is essential to make sure that you thoroughly rinse off the cleaning solution, though. This will make sure that all of the dirt and grime do not remain. If you leave it long enough, you may end up damaging your jewelry more than you anticipate.
